This week, I talk about my “strategy” for dealing with bad reviews and detail how much time I spend worrying about them.
To boil it right down: Don’t stress yourself out about them.
In just about any situation, I ask myself 2 questions:
- Can I do anything about this situation right now?
- Is there anything I can learn from this situation?
It may annoy my wife now and then as I apply that philosophy to just about everything in my life (as I have rather severe consequences if I get too stressed out) but when it comes to reviews, the first question is always a “No” and unless the review provides some useful critical feedback the answer to the second is often “No” as well.
Any time I can answer no to both questions, I put whatever it is out of my mind and don’t spend any more brainpower or time on it. It’s just not worth bringing on a migraine and spending a few hours or days going blind from hallucinations and suffering through a splitting headache. (Before I got my migraines under control, I went blind for 2 weeks once…it isn’t something that I have any desire to repeat.)
That said, there are a few things that you can do about negative reviews, so even though the short answer is, “Don’t stress about it,” I do provide some other actionable advice in this week’s episode and in the transcript below.
Speaking of reviews, it would really help me if you’d let me know what you think by leaving a review at iTunes and/or Stitcher Radio, wherever you listen to the show!
